Parklawn Preschool is seeking a Centre Supervisor experienced with children ages 18 mos - 12 years old in a non-profit child care setting.

The centre supervisor is responsible for overseeing, planning and implementing a child care program according to all Ministry of Education and City of Toronto regulations and standards. In addition, as well as the Program Statement set out by Park Lawn Preschool Inc. The Supervisor will provide leadership to a team of Early Childhood Educators and Assistants for classroom support and will fulfill all the requirements of an Early Childhood Educator. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, flexibility to work with all age groups and in all programs, field trips, staff evaluations, workshops and in-service planning and training.


  • Graduate of an Early Childhood Education Program at a recognized institution (University Degree preferred or College Diploma)
  • Must be registered and a member in good standing with the College of Early Childhood Educators
  • Five years successful experience teaching as an Early Childhood Educator
  • Must have Minimum 2 years of Supervisory Experience in a child care setting in Toronto
  • Demonstrates patience, dedication, energy, enthusiasm and caring

  • Demonstrates ability to lead a team of educators and takes initiative
  • Encourages parental involvement in the child care centre
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with children, parents, staff, volunteers and visitors
  • Communicates effectively both in writing and orally with parents, staff and children
  • Ability to maintain neat and accurate records and exhibits strong organization skills
  • Experience and sensitivity in dealing with staff, children, parents, and visitors of different cultural and racial backgrounds, including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
  • Demonstrates skill and flexibility for program continuity
  • Demonstrates ability to plan and implement programs by meticulously following guidelines set out by Toronto Children’s Services’ Early Learning and Care Assessment for Quality Improvement

  • Implements the use of Best Practices in the child care centre
  • Demonstrates ability to put “How Does Learning Happen?” into practice at the child care centre
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge and the ability to implement the 6 guiding principles of the Ontario Early Learning Framework
  • Thorough knowledge of Toronto Public Health Guidelines and Policies
  • Excellent computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Word required (Excel and Power Point an asset)
  • Knowledge of different operating systems an asset (Mac, Windows)
  • Technology savvy – ability to train staff on technology used in program
  • Knowledge of HiMama app
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • Ability to handle emergencies, crisis or hostile behaviour
  • Ability to use professional judgement on a daily basis within the guidelines established by the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014 and program policies

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operational
  • Maintain day-to-day licensing standards
  • Maintain quality standards set out by the City of Toronto
  • Conduct centre tours with families
  • All office functions, including handling of enquiries, registration, parent interviews, and new enrolment, updating and revising admission and other forms as necessary, photocopying, monitoring attendance of children and staff, and other administrative duties as required
  • Supervise and assist all program staff, students, and volunteers
  • Supervise and train program staff in functions pertaining to the centre
  • Plan and implement all trips, PD Days and other school break-related activities and special programming (i.e. seasonal)
  • Ensure program experiences actively promote diversity, access, equity and inclusion
  • Act as a resource person for staff members in matters relating to children in the program by providing guidance and direction
  • Act as a positive role model for all staff members, ensuring a cooperative work environment is maintained
  • Complete annual and six month performance appraisals for all staff and establish and follow-through on goals and objectives as outlined in individual staff performance appraisals

  • Thorough knowledge of Toronto Children's Services AQI, the Ontario Early Learning Framework and How Does Learning Happen? is required.

  • Oversee and assist staff in the planning and implementation of age appropriate programs from 18 months to 12 years old with a focus on language and literacy, physical, social, cognitive, and emotional development in accordance with the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014, AQI, Ontario Early Learning Framework and “How Does Learning Happen?”
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of all required elements in program planning
  • Ensure daily routines meet the needs of children, including, eating times, diaper change, etc.
  • Assist children in washing, dressing, toilet routines, eating and the like to develop self-help skills
  • Ensure children are dressed appropriately for outdoor activities
  • Obtain appropriate supplies for planned activities, checking that activity area, toys and equipment are safe and sanitary and that activities are set up and tidied up
  • Provide program experiences that actively promote anti-racist and anti-bias interactions and attitudes.

  • Ensure all aspects of the Program Statement is implemented within the child care centre.
  • Act as a role model for staff as a responsive and reflective practitioner

  • Assist in recruitment process of staff, volunteers and students, including interviewing and reference checks
  • Provide new staff an orientation of the centre
  • Schedule staff according to budget guidelines, while maintaining ratios and the needs of the centre
  • Responsible for finding replacement supply staff when staff is absent
  • Ensure staff timetables are followed and are performing duties as assigned.

  • Administer centre’s budget and ensure expenditures are controlled and maintained within the approved budget limitations.

  • Thorough knowledge of the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014
  • Keep informed of updates from the College of Early Childhood Educators

  • Thorough knowledge of Toronto Public Health Guidelines and Procedures
  • Comply fully with health and safety procedures in accordance with municipal and provincial legislation and regulation
  • Ensure daily menus meet the Canada’s Food Guide requirements as outlined in AQI
  • Assist in the licensing process, including any preparation or file review, meet with the inspector and the Operations Manager and ensure a review and implementation, as appropriate, of any licensing recommendations
  • Have a good understanding of Accessibility of Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)
  • Ensure the Supervisor responsibilities under the Ontario Health and Safety Act are adhered to at all times, including Workplace Harassment and Violence

  • Parent and Community Relations
  • Maintain a high level of customer service and parental satisfaction by being courteous, considerate and maintain a professional manner
  • Promote parental involvement in the program and encourage them to participate in the fundraising activities of the centre
  • Prepare and distribute a regular parent newsletter, including content such as staff articles, upcoming programs, items of interest, children’s notes and notes from the supervisor
  • Accommodate the parent’s instructions for daily care routines within the group routines and ensure that all staff is aware and follows through with the agreed accommodations
  • Seek outside agency supports for centre or children’s needs. Review, complete, distribute reports with staff and/or outside agencies
  • Provide parent and family resources as required by AQI
  • Safe and Healthy Environment
  • Follow Park Lawn Preschool Inc. procedures for maintaining health records, health checks, and administering medication and first aid, and recording of the administration of medically prescribed medication and any first aid, including any incident or other reports required by the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014
  • Responsible for ensuring the safety of children and staff at the centre
  • Ensure the Supervisor responsibilities under the Ontario Health and Safety Act are adhered to at all times, including Workplace Harassment and Violence
  • Supervision of Placement Students
  • Recruit student teachers from community colleges, and oversee their activities and evaluations in collaboration with the teachers to whom they are assigned
  • Establish reasonable and achievable expectations for students
  • Ensure that Supervisor or a Registered Early Childhood Educator completes orientation, placement and evaluation of students within a specific time frame
